If you are new to cricket, fielding positions can sound like a secret code. What does Silly Mid-On mean? Why is there a Third Man and a Fine Leg? And where exactly is Deep Backward Point?
At CricVision, we get these questions daily from beginners and even club cricketers. That’s why our coaching team at CricVision created a simple system to remember every position.
Here is the complete guide from CricVision’s Cricket Rules section to help you master all fielding positions once and for all.
The 2 Golden Rules from CricVision Coaches
Before you memorize 35+ names, our coaches at CricVision teach you two rules:
1. Off Side vs Leg Side: For a right-handed batsman, your left side is Off Side and your right side is Leg Side (also called On Side). The field flips for a left-hander.
2. Distance Prefix:
- Silly / Short = Very close to the batsman
- No Prefix = Inside the 30-yard circle
- Deep / Long = Near the boundary rope
Understand these two, and you already know half the positions.

- Wicket-Keeper: Behind the stumps.
- First Slip, Second Slip, Third Slip: Line of catchers for outside edges.
- Gully: Wider than slips, for thick edges.

- Point: Square on off side, needs fastest reflexes.
- Cover & Extra Cover: Between point and mid-off. Where Kohli plays his cover drives.
- Mid-Off: Straighter on off side, near the bowler.
3. Off Side – Outfield (Boundary Riders)
Deep Point, Deep Cover, Deep Extra Cover, Long-Off – The CricVision chart marks these as the main boundary-saving positions in ODIs.
4. Leg Side – The Busiest Side
This is where most runs are scored in T20s:
- Square Leg, Mid-Wicket, Mid-On: The core leg-side ring.
